Post-Ten Work

The completion of the basic ten-series isn't the end. If anything it is just the beginning; it is the start of experiencing life anew from a more competent structure. The body will still be laying down new connective tissue for some months to come and we encourage you to have around six months rest from Structural Integration to allow these changes to be fully integrated into your system.

After that time you will most probably want to get back onto the Rolfing table. This is what we call post-ten work. Provided you haven’t fallen or pulled anything out of position since your tenth session, the post-ten work normally comprises three sessions done over a period of three weeks or so. Following a review of your individual needs, we address both shoulder and pelvic girdles and follow this by a session designed to integrate the two sessions.

After that, we again ask that you allow the body to rest before the next post-ten series. A post-ten three-session series twice a year may be all that is needed to keep you tuned up: if your lifestyle places high demands on your body you may want to increase the frequency to one post-ten series every three months.

If you have fallen or pulled something out of place, we will need to address this before doing any post-ten work; we would address the specific problem in a remedial session, track your progress and continue on to the post-ten work once your structure has regained its balance.

If your structure requires a more in-depth post-ten series, your practitioner will advise you as to the number of sessions that would most benefit you. In some cases your structure may well benefit from the entire ten-series again; your structure will be vastly different at this point from that at the start of the first ten-session series.

Where the ten-series is repeated, clients often report that the benefits of the first series are amplified as well as gaining further benefits.

Advanced Five-Series

Once you have achieved a good level of structural organisation and body awareness following your individual program of work you may want to further advanced your experience of Structural Integration. The advanced five-session series both compliments and departs from the basic series; it comprises a new module of five sessions that require a greater degree of participation and awareness from the client and a greater level of skill on the part of your practitioner.

The Advanced series begins with the client in a horizontal position; in this first session we establish fascial order. We attend to the body's deep fascial planes and the relationship between the head and the deep spinal channel.
The Z position can be traced to ancient tantric yoga. The second session produces most of the new material which is subsequently explored, integrated and balanced in the next three sessions.
The normal adult spine displays two major curvatures: the primary curvature; the foetal or "C" curve and the secondary; lumbar and cervical curves. In this session we are interested in any restrictions that inhibit the spine from forming a smooth C curve.
For this session, the client sits with 90° angles at the hip and knee; they must be able to move intrinsically along an imagined line of intention. As the client moves, the practitioner balances their hip and shoulder girdles around their Line.
In the last session we release any impingements of the girdles on the Line. Our goal is a balanced, standing structure in effortless control of movement initiated from the Line. Now we have the opportunity to accomplish these goals in standing and moving.
