What is Rolfing® / The Rolf Method of Structural Integration*?

Structural Integration is a comprehensive, hands-on method in which the body's structure is gradually realigned through manipulation of the soft-tissue, guided movement and client education. Knotted muscles, spasms and areas of poor movement or injury (felt as aches, pains or stiffness) are gradually released in a ten-session process.

The goal of Structural Integration is to achieve greater freedom and comfort in sitting, standing and moving by adjusting the body's relationship with gravity. In order to achieve this, the symmetry of the body is assessed, every aspect of your posture is evaluated and every limitation that affects your structure is systematically released.

The result is a feeling of greater ease and flexibility of the body as a whole. There is freedom from pain and a greater freedom in movement. In addition to the physical changes, Structural Integration also results in positive emotional changes, increased energy levels and mental clarity.

Structural Integration is a very personal process. It is important to remember this, as no two people are identical. Likewise, their experience of and benefits from Structural Integration will never be exactly the same.

Structural Integration is endorsed by medical and sports professionals alike, in America the National Basketball Team, the Phoenix Suns were the first team to retain their own Rolfer back in 1994.

Structural Integration boasts an impressive who's who record of endorsements from celebrities, athletes and health professionals. Dr. Rolf herself worked with actress Greta Garbo and artist Georgia O'Keefe among others. Fortunately you don't need to be an Olympic athlete to invest in your body today. Our approach to health-care is evolving and now doctors recommend Structural Integration as an alternative to surgery, chiropractors and osteopaths as a natural extension to their work.

* Structural Integration is the name given by Dr. Ida P. Rolf for her technique. The terms Rolfing® and Rolfers® are nicknames for her work and practitioners. They are now trademarks of the Rolf Institute.
